My mother-in-law Cynthia moved in with us, and soon after, my daughter Lisa began acting strangely. She was no longer her cheerful, energetic self. One terrifying night, I watched her sleepwalk through the house clutching her teddy bear. I quietly followed her — and what I discovered left me frozen in horror.
We used to be a happy family. Tony worked as a financial analyst while dreaming of starting his own business. I balanced my career and took care of our home and our sweet daughter Lisa. Life felt full of laughter and cozy family moments.
One evening, Tony came home bursting with excitement. “Amelie, I found partners! I can finally start my own business!”
I hugged him tightly. “That’s wonderful, Tony. You’ve worked so hard for this.”
But then his expression turned hesitant. “There’s something else. With both of us busier now, Mom suggested moving in. She’s been complaining about her health and wants to help look after Lisa.”
I frowned. Cynthia had never truly accepted me as Tony’s wife. Still, Tony insisted we needed the help, so I reluctantly agreed.
A few days later, Cynthia arrived with a big smile, carrying a fluffy teddy bear for Lisa. “Look what Grandma brought you, sweetheart!”
Lisa hugged the bear with pure joy. I forced a polite smile, hoping we could all make it work.
At first, things seemed okay. But soon Lisa became cranky and unusually tired during the day. One night, I caught her sleepwalking — eyes closed, clutching that teddy bear. I gently guided her back to bed, my worry growing.
The next morning, I told Tony. Cynthia quickly brushed it off: “Tony used to sleepwalk as a child. It’s nothing to worry about.”
Later that day, Tony noticed money missing from his wallet. Strangely, I later found a large sum in my own purse — exactly the amount he was missing. We were both confused, but Tony brushed it off.
The incidents kept happening. Lisa grew more attached to the teddy bear, and her sleepwalking continued. I decided that if it happened again, I would follow her.
That night, it did. Lisa got up, eyes open but distant, and walked straight to Cynthia’s room. I hid outside the door and heard my mother-in-law’s low, insistent voice:
“Go to your parents’ room… Take the money from the safe, Lisa. Remember, it’s our little secret.”
My blood ran cold. I woke Tony immediately. He didn’t believe me at first, but when we checked the safe, the money was gone. Moments later, we found it hidden in my purse. Tony turned on me in anger, believing I was trying to frame his mother. He asked me to leave for a while and let Cynthia watch Lisa.
Heartbroken, I started packing the next morning. While in Lisa’s room, I heard her talking to the teddy bear. She innocently revealed that Grandma had told her it was their little secret — and that the bear used to “talk” to her before bedtime.
That was the final piece. I didn’t leave. Instead, I waited for Tony to come home that evening.
When he arrived, I showed him the teddy bear and carefully opened it, revealing a small hidden recording and speaker device inside. I pressed the button and spoke into it — and my voice echoed clearly from Cynthia’s room.
Tony rushed in and found the matching device hidden under his mother’s pillow.
Cynthia’s face went pale as the truth came crashing down. She had been using the device to manipulate Lisa in her sleep, making her steal money and plant it to frame me. Her goal was to drive me out and take control of the household.
Tony was devastated. After a painful confrontation, Cynthia broke down in tears and admitted she felt threatened and wanted to feel needed again. Tony told her she had crossed an unforgivable line.
In the end, we agreed Cynthia could visit Lisa occasionally on weekends, but she would no longer live with us. The betrayal hurt deeply, but it also brought Tony and me closer as we protected our daughter and rebuilt trust in our home.
Lisa slowly returned to her happy, cheerful self. Our family had been shaken, but we emerged stronger — and far more united.
