I never imagined my wedding night would begin with hesitation instead of romance. After an exhausting but magical day, all I wanted was a quiet moment to breathe and process everything.
“Scott, can we… talk for a bit?” I asked softly, still wearing my wedding dress.
Scott frowned, irritation clear on his face. “Talk? Now?”
“I’m just so tired,” I whispered. “We need a moment to let everything sink in.”
He nodded reluctantly and kissed my cheek, hiding his disappointment. But hours later, I woke up to the bed shaking. Scott wasn’t beside me. In the dim light, I saw him kneeling on the floor, gently rocking a baby in his arms.
“Scott?” I gasped, bolting upright. “What’s going on? Where did the baby come from?”
He froze, looking caught. “Everly… this is Ella. She’s my orphaned niece. My stepsister Maya passed away…”
“Your stepsister?” I repeated in shock. “When? Why didn’t I know about any of this?”
Scott looked down. “I only found out weeks ago. I was terrified you’d leave if I told you.”
The revelation hit like a bomb on our first night as husband and wife. We had only been married for twelve hours, and suddenly there was a baby in our lives. The next day we brought little Ella home to Scott’s sprawling estate. Weeks passed, and though I grew to care deeply for her, something felt deeply wrong.
One evening I asked him directly, “If you and your stepsister were so estranged, why are you so determined to raise her child?”
“She has no one else,” he replied, dodging the real question.
My suspicions grew stronger. While Scott was at work, I found an old photo on his desk showing him happily embracing a pregnant woman. When I confronted him that night, he finally cracked.
“Alright… I wasn’t completely honest. I stayed in touch with Maya and helped her. I didn’t want the complications to scare you away.”
“Complications? You mean the truth?” I shot back angrily. The argument escalated until I suggested we consider finding Ella a stable adoptive family.
Scott’s face twisted. “You think I married you just to give Ella a mother? Why can’t you just be a good person, Everly?”
The tension became unbearable. A few days later, I took Ella with me to a quiet beach to clear my head. While we sat watching the waves, a stranger approached with a cruel laugh.
“Scott’s niece, huh?” she sneered. “Run for your life, girl.”
Her warning sent chills down my spine. Back home, I demanded the full truth from Scott.
“Ella isn’t your niece… is she?”
After a long silence, he whispered, “She’s my daughter.”
The betrayal crushed me. I packed my bags immediately. “You started our marriage with lies. I can’t do this.”
I left and tried to rebuild my life through work. But weeks later, Scott showed up at my door with Ella. Her sweet giggles melted something inside me. Despite everything, I still loved that little girl.
“Can we try again?” Scott asked softly. “This time with complete honesty.”
I nodded, pulling them both inside. Scott had a lot to make up for, but Ella needed a mother — and deep down, I knew I wanted to be that for her. Our road to happily ever after had taken a wild detour, but maybe, just maybe, we could still find our way.
